Alexandra Von Triessen | Sebastian D’Antonio | Conrad

Alexandra Von Triessen

Alexandra Von Triessen is a deeply introspective and passionate pianist whose journey is at the heart of Descending Thirds. Raised as the only child of wealthy and emotionally repressed parents, Alexandra found solace and emotional expression in music from a young age. Her upbringing was stifling, her emotions constrained by her parents’ rigid expectations, but the piano became her refuge, the one place where she could channel her sensitivity and longing into something meaningful. Her talent flourished, but her quiet nature and self-doubt kept her from fully embracing her potential.
Her life changes when she is accepted into the Royal Academy of Music in England, where she meets Chandra Hashimoto, a fellow prodigy who becomes her lifelong friend. Over the years, Alexandra evolves from a shy, uncertain girl into a rising star in the classical music world. At the International Ketterling Piano Competition in Portland, she risks everything by choosing an emotionally charged piece over a safer, more technical one. Her boldness wins her first prize, but the victory is bittersweet as it entangles her with Sebastian D’Antonio, a charismatic but troubled fellow competitor. Alexandra’s journey is one of constant tension—between her need for emotional authenticity and the demands of a competitive, often cutthroat world. Her relationship with Sebastian, as well as her growing connection to Conrad, forces her to confront her own desires and the sacrifices she must make for her art.

Sebastian D’Antonio

Sebastian D’Antonio is a magnetic and enigmatic figure whose charm masks a deep well of insecurity. Raised by his eccentric and bohemian mother, Antonia, Sebastian grew up in a world of artistic indulgence and cultivated myth. Antonia convinced him from an early age that he was descended from Johann Sebastian Bach, a lineage she claimed as fact despite its dubious authenticity. This myth became the cornerstone of Sebastian’s identity, driving him to pursue music with fervor but also leaving him trapped by the weight of impossible expectations. Though Sebastian is undeniably talented, his music often leans on flash and flair rather than substance. Critics see him as a showman, and his technical limitations begin to overshadow his charisma. His relationship with Alexandra initially reignites his passion, but it also reveals his dependency on external validation. When Alexandra discovers the truth about his lineage—and the fraudulent nature of his supposed masterpiece, The Immortal Romance Concerti—Sebastian spirals into despair. His tragic end is a culmination of his inability to reconcile the myth of his greatness with the reality of his limitations.

Conrad

Conrad, Sebastian’s adopted brother, is the embodiment of artistic genius tempered by inner turmoil. Discovered by Antonia as a child prodigy, Conrad’s life has been defined by his extraordinary talent and his devotion to music. Unlike Sebastian, Conrad’s connection to music is profound and deeply personal, a language through which he expresses truths beyond words. While Sebastian thrives on performance and public adoration, Conrad seeks meaning and authenticity, often at great personal cost.
After Antonia’s death, Conrad abandons the sheltered world of his upbringing and travels the globe in search of himself and the soul of music. His journey is marked by hardship, including a near-fatal bout with malaria, but also by moments of revelation, such as his friendship with Lars, an expatriate jazz musician who helps him rediscover his voice. When he returns home, Conrad is both a catalyst and a foil to Sebastian, his quiet brilliance contrasting sharply with his brother’s desperate need for attention. His connection with Alexandra evolves into a profound and ultimately forbidden bond, challenging both of them to confront their deepest fears and desires.
